The Chillakallu police of NTR Commissionerate arrested a woman, identified as P. Visalakshi, on charges of stealing ornaments from a passenger in a bus and recovered gold and silver ornaments worth around ₹7 lakh from her possession.

Police Commissioner S.V. Rajashekar Babu and DCP B. Lakshminarayana formed special teams to probe the case. The investigating officers examined the CCTV footage and arrested the woman a day after receiving the report, said Jaggaiahpet Circle Inspector P. Venkateswarlu.

Visalakshi, a native of Amaravaram village in Kanchikacherla mandal of NTR District boarded a bus at Vijayawada. She allegedly stole a handbag belonging to a woman passenger, in which gold and silver ornaments were kept.

The police team led by Chillakallu SIs T. Surya Srinivas and S.N.S. Manikanta identified the accused after examining the footage of 25 surveillance cameras. The woman got down from the bus with the handbag at Kanchikacherla bus station.

“The woman picked up the handbag while the passenger was asleep and alighted the bus,” Mr. Venkateswarlu said on Thursday.
