Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar on Tuesday directed officials to step up measures to augment revenue, while ensuring that such efforts do not inconvenience the public.
At a State-level review meeting, the Mr. Prabhakar noted that revenue collections increased as against last year to ₹7,097.38 crore. He was apprised that a marginal dip in expected revenue was attributable to the State’s electric vehicle policy. Responding to this concern, Mr Prabhakar suggested exploring alternative revenue streams to offset this impact
He commended officers who met targets, particularly in Life Tax and Quarterly Tax collections, but cautioned others to improve performance.
Special attention was given to border districts, including Nizamabad and Adilabad along the Maharashtra border, and Medak along the Karnataka border, where officials were asked to remain vigilant in ensuring tax compliance of out-of-State vehicles.
Emphasising citizen-centric service delivery, the Minister instructed that pending licences and other services at Regional Transport Offices be cleared without delays. He underscored ongoing reforms aimed at improving transparency, including vehicle registrations at dealer points, and called for the completion of data integration on the VAHAN portal while resolving technical issues.
Mr Prabhakar expressed satisfaction over Telangana securing the top position nationally within eight months of implementing the Sarathi system. He also directed that structured training programmes be extended to officials in phases.
As part of the Praja Palana – Pragati Pranalika initiative, the Minister said the “Arrive Alive” campaign, scheduled from April 13 to 18, should be conducted in coordination with the police to raise awareness on road safety, including the risks of overspeeding, drunk driving, and non-use of helmets and seat belts.
The Minister said 37 Automatic Testing Stations had been sanctioned and directed officials to ensure it becomes operational by June 1. He also highlighted initiatives such as the Rahaveer and PM Rahat schemes, which provide financial assistance and incentives for aiding accident victims, and called for wider public awareness.
