With the Male Mahadeshwara (M.M.) Hills declared a ‘plastic-free zone’, Deputy Commissioner Shilpa Nag has directed officials to ensure strict enforcement of the ban and make all necessary arrangements to celebrate a ‘Green Deepavali’ during the upcoming temple fair.
During a video conference with officials to review preparations for the Deepavali Jatra Mahotsav scheduled to be held from October 18 to 22 at M.M. Hills on Monday, Ms. Nag said that around 30,000 devotees are expected to visit the shrine every day during the festivities.
She directed authorities to ensure full compliance with the ban on the use, distribution, and transportation of plastic materials in and around the temple area and to create awareness about the restrictions.
Check-posts will be set up at all entry points to the hill shrine to prevent devotees from carrying plastic items, which will be confiscated if found. The Male Mahadeshwara Development Authority will promote the use of eco-friendly alternatives, Ms. Nag added.
Organisations and donors distributing food and water must use biodegradable materials such as paper plates and cups. Food donors must register and obtain prior permission and ensure proper collection and disposal of waste generated after distribution.
NSS volunteers will be deployed at both Taalabetta and M.M. Hills to encourage devotees to cooperate in keeping the area clean and plastic-free.
Ms. Nag appealed to devotees, donors, and traders to join hands in celebrating an eco-friendly Deepavali, preserving the sanctity of the hill shrine and ensuring it remains a plastic-free zone.
