Five people, including a woman contesting in the upcoming local body elections, were injured in an alleged attack by a suspected drug trafficking gang in Kadinamkulam late Sunday.

Angeline, the Left Democratic Front (LDF) candidate for the Puthukurichi North ward in Kadinamkulam grama panchayat, and her husband and relatives sustained injuries in the assault. The incident occurred in front of her residence when a four-member group allegedly hurled abuses at them.

Angeline’s husband was assaulted when he questioned them. The candidate also came under attack when she attempted to intervene. The attackers purportedly assaulted her using a wooden stick when she fell on the road.

While her family members rushed to the spot, the perpetrators brought more people and attacked the family members too. A group of over 20 people is suspected to have attacked the family

In another case, four vehicles parked outside the house of a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) worker were set ablaze in Chirayinkeezhu.

The incident occurred outside the residence of Babu of Anathalavattom. An autorickshaw, two motorcycles and a scooter were completely gutted in the incident. A similar attempt was allegedly made last week to set fire to the house of Babu’s brother, who is contesting the elections in Chirayinkeezhu.
