Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday (March 22, 2026) became India’s longest serving head of government, combining State and national level, serving 8931 days in office as the first Gujarat Chief Minister and later as Prime Minister, surpassing former Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Chamling’s record of 8930 days in office.

His Cabinet colleagues congratulated Prime Minister Modi on this record, with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh lauding his “pure devotion to the nation and its people” both as Chief Minister of Gujarat and as PM, and Home Minister Amit Shah terming it a “milestone rooted in service, hard work and unwavering commitment.”

Roads and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari also posted his felicitations to Prime Minister Modi on this milestone, stating that it “stands as a testament to enduring public trust and a lifelong mission devoted to Bharat’s growth and progress.”

Prime Minister Modi is the first Indian PM born after the country’s independence in 1947, and has led his party to victory in three consecutive Lok Sabha elections in 2014, 2019, and 2024.
