Smoke billowing from the BSNL building on Anna Salai, Chennai

A fire broke out on the second floor of a seven-storey building on Anna Salai that houses the BSNL office. No one was injured in the incident.
Police sources said that various divisions, such as the landline and SIM card distribution office headquarters, marketing, accounts, and billing, operate from this BSNL building. On Saturday (December 20, 2025), around 9 a.m., when BSNL employees arrived for work, they noticed thick black smoke billowing from the building and immediately informed the Fire and Rescue Services.
Fire engines from Egmore, Vepery, Triplicane, Ice House, and other areas rushed to the spot and were engaged in firefighting operations. Due to the fire, thick black smoke engulfed parts of the Anna Salai area, causing inconvenience to motorists.
Meanwhile, as a large number of firefighters continued their efforts to douse the blaze, electrical equipment on the second floor was completely gutted and reduced to ashes, sources in the Fire and Rescue department said.
