S. Chandran, director of City Theatres and son of P. Subramaniam, founder of Merryland Studio, passed away here on Tuesday. He was 90. After the passing of Subramaniam, Mr. Chandran had taken over the management of the studio and the running of the cinemas Sreekumar, Sree Visakh, New, and Sree Padmanabha, which are some of the oldest surviving movie houses in the capital.

In a post on X, actor Kamal Haasan wrote – “I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Mr. Chandran, the son of Merryland Subramaniam. More than our professional association and more than the fact that many of my films ran for long periods in his theatres, what truly connected us was our shared love for the arts. He was an ardent admirer of art, with a special interest in photography.”

S. N. Raghuchandran Nair and Abraham Thomas, president and secretary of Trivandrum Chamber of Commerce and Industry respectively, condoled the death of Mr. Chandran.

His mortal remains will be kept at the Chamber Hall, Jawahar Nagar in the city between 10 and 11 a.m. on Wednesday for people to pay homage. Thereafter, the body will be taken to the Sree Padmanabha Theatre and then to the New Theatre buildings in Thampanoor.

The final rites will be held at his residence at 3 p.m.
