Noted writer T. Padmanabhan has openly supported senior Congress leader K C Venugopal in the debate over who should become the next Chief Minister of Kerala.

Mr. Padmanabhan on Friday said he has “close relations with many Congress leaders, but is personally closest” to Mr. Venugopal.

Referring to the three main contenders for the Chief Minister’s post, he said Mr. Venugopal deserves first preference because of his “experience, compassion towards ordinary people, and proven performance in both Parliament and the Kerala Assembly.”

He also praised Mr. Venugopal’s relationship with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, calling the former “Rahul Gandhi’s conscience keeper” and a trusted strategist who guides him from behind the scenes.

Mr. Padmanabhan said Mr. Gandhi values ability and leadership and that Mr. Venugopal’s close association with him reflects his political strength.

Responding to criticism that Mr. Venugopal would have to resign as MP if he became Chief Minister, leading to a costly by-election, Mr. Padmanabhan dismissed the argument. He said the government spent money on many things and that “the cost of a by-election is not a serious issue.”

Mr. Padmanabhan also questioned “whether public sentiments truly support unity within the party.” He argued that political leadership should not be decided by the display of strength or factional influence.

At the same time, he acknowledged that V.D. Satheesan had “worked hard” and said that all three contenders, including Ramesh Chennithala are “capable leaders.”
