Some leaders of the Uttar Pradesh Congress on Thursday (February 19, 2026) alleged that police in many parts of the State are not accepting their complaint against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for registering First Information Report (FIR) over his alleged communal, anti-constitution comments aimed at creating division among communities.

“We are running a campaign to get registered at least 100 FIRs against the Assam Chief Minister for his continuous communal statements. Such comments are anti-constitutional, against the basic idea of India’s republic, divisive and aimed at orchestrating civil war in the country. But, the police at many places are not accepting the complaint. Accepting the complaint is a step towards registering the FIR. At 20 places, complaint is accepted; we are waiting for the FIR to be registered. Or else we will move the court,” said Congress national secretary Shahnawaz Alam, who is leading the campaign against Mr. Sarma.

Mr. Alam urged the judiciary to take suo motu cognisance of the alleged statements and initiate action against the Assam Chief Minister. “The communal statements of Mr. Sarma are a matter of urgent public interest, and legal action is a must by the courts,” said the Congress leader.
