The Catholic Nasrani Association on Thursday appealed to the Union and State governments to introduce Church legislation to ensure transparency in the collection and utilisation of funds by Christian Churches.

Addressing the media, association leaders, led by M.P. George, said the governments concerned should prepare legislation to address the issue. To discuss the matter, the association will hold a symposium on November 8, which will have participation from legal circles and Church leadership. Following the symposium, association officials will present a formal request in this regard to the government.

The association raised concerns about the alleged financial opacity in certain dioceses of the Syro-Malabar Church and misuse of devotees’ contributions. It also called for amendments to canonical laws to clarify leadership roles within the Church. Protest programmes at diocesan headquarters are also planned after the symposium to press these demands.
