Namma Metro commuters in Bengaluru can now purchase tickets directly through the Uber app. On December 10, the ride-hailing company launched QR-based ticketing powered by the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC).
The app supports UPI payments. It also provides real-time metro information.
The feature has already been adopted in Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai, and Bengaluru is the latest metro city where Uber is integrating public transport into its ecosystem. The company said the move aligns with its broader goal of helping users discover, plan and pay for their journeys within a single, unified app.
Alongside metro ticketing, Uber also announced its entry into the B2B logistics space through Uber Direct, a service that operates on ONDC’s digital infrastructure. The initiative is part of Uber’s plan to strengthen its multi-service platform in India by combining mobility, delivery and digital commerce.
Strengthens first- and last-mile connectivity
BMRCL Managing Director J. Ravishankar welcomed the integration, noting that it fits into Namma Metro’s ‘multi-operator’ approach to digital ticketing. “Uber’s initiative to integrate Namma Metro ticketing into its platform through ONDC makes travel more seamless for commuters. Uber’s entry also strengthens first- and last-mile connectivity, and expands commuter choice,” he said.
In a push towards enhancing digital access and seamless travel, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has enabled QR ticketing through the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), where metro tickets will be available via popular consumer-facing apps.
Currently, passengers can book Namma Metro tickets on integrated apps such as EaseMyTrip, Highway Delite, Miles & Kilometres (via Telegram), Namma Yatri, OneTicket, Rapido, Redbus, Tummoc, and Yatri – City Travel Guide. These are in addition to the existing platforms — the Namma Metro mobile app, the WhatsApp chatbot (8105556677), and the Paytm app.
Bengaluru a ‘playground for innovation’
Calling Bengaluru a ‘playground for innovation’, Prabhjeet Singh, President, Uber India and South Asia, said the city was a natural choice for expanding Uber’s integration with ONDC. “The launch of metro ticketing and Uber Direct in the city helps us bring alive our vision to help people ‘Go anywhere, Get anything’. We are excited to build that at scale with ONDC,” he said.
Unlike Uber Courier, which is directly booked by app users, Uber Direct functions as a logistics engine for enterprises, and remains invisible to the end-consumer. Orders are placed on a seller’s website or app, and Uber delivers the item without any user interaction until the driver arrives at the doorstep. The company said this makes Uber Direct a “standardised, plug-and-play solution” for businesses looking for reliable and scalable delivery support.
The logistics service went live in Bengaluru on December 10, with Uber fulfilling grocery deliveries for Zepto and KPN Farm Fresh via ONDC. Within the next two weeks, Uber Direct will begin handling food delivery for multiple brands, including KFC, Burger King, Taco Bell and Rebel Foods.
