Tiruchi district has topped in the arrival of tourists in the State for August this year.

According to the statistics of the Department of Tourism, Tiruchi district attracted 23.09 lakh tourists in August. Of them, 22.94 lakh were domestic travellers and the remaining 14,706 were foreigners. It is followed by Madurai district with 21.65 lakh tourists. However, Madurai had a higher share of foreign travellers at 1.53 lakh.

As far as the arrival of foreign tourists is concerned, Madurai is at the top, followed by Tiruchi.

Thoothukudi occupied the third place with 21.10 lakh tourists, followed by Ramanathapuram district, which houses Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple in Rameswaram, with 20.16 lakh tourists. Ramanathapuram district lags in attracting foreign tourists accounting for 3,501 of them.

Thanjavur district, which is home to Sri Brihadeeswarar Temple, popularly known as Big Temple and a world heritage site, attracted 15 lakh tourists. More than 14.71 lakh tourists have visited Tiruvannamalai, where Sri Arunachaleswarar Temple is located. It is followed by Coimbatore district with 14 lakh visitors. Nagapattinam district attracted over 12 lakh tourists this year.

An analysis of the statistics shows that the districts that attracted more than 15 lakh tourists have popular places of worship, including historic temples, churches, dargahs, and monuments. Sri Mariamman Temple in Samayapuram, Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple in Srirangam, the Rockfort Temple, and others in Tiruchi attract devotees not only from Tamil Nadu but also from Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala, and so on.

“Among all types of tourism, we find religious tourism stand first. As far as Tiruchi is concerned, it has a balanced growth in terms of places of worship, business and trade and heritage. The advent of social media has added to the growth of domestic traffic in Tiruchi region. The pattern suggests that the number of tourists is set to increase in the coming years as well,” says S.A. Mubashir, vice-president, Tiruchi Tourism Federation.
