Madurai Bench orders notice to nine convicts in Sattankulam custodial death case

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Friday (April 24, 2026) ordered notice to the nine policemen who were sentenced to death by a court in Madurai in the case of custodial death of trader P. Jayaraj, 58, and his son J. Benicks, 31, at Sattankulam in Thoothukudi district in June 2020.

A Division Bench of Justices N. Anand Venkatesh and K.K. Ramakrishnan, hearing the referred trial, ordered notice to the convicts: the then Sattankulam inspector, S. Sridhar; sub-inspectors P. Raghu Ganesh and K. Balakrishnan; head constables S. Murugan and A. Saamidurai; and constables M. Muthuraj, S. Chelladurai, X. Thomas Francis, and S. Veilumuthu.
