The Tamil Nadu Survey Officers’ Union (TNSOU) has announced an indefinite strike from November 18, pressing for various demands. It said that the State government has not responded to the agitations staged in Chennai on July 15 and 16 and on September 7 and 8, thus prompting the decision to stage the indefinite strike from November 18.
Reduction in the target for online patta transfers, timely promotions for surveyors, declaration of results for the recruitment of new surveyors, addressing pay-related issues, dropping the proposal to appoint surveyors on a contract basis, and appointing field assistants on a special time-scale of pay instead of on a contract basis were among the demands.
TNSOU president J. Raja and general secretary Anna Kuberan also called for the creation of inspector and surveyor posts in the newly formed firkas and revenue divisions, and for training officials in law and order and judicial procedures, since they are involved in surveying, maintaining land registers, and surveying land for court cases, among other duties.
The union also called for creating new posts for the newly formed municipalities. It further urged the implementation of a system that allows patta transfers to be done only online across the State. The TNSOU also requested that the State government distribute the equipment required to carry out survey work across the State.
