In a tragic incident, a seven-year-old boy died after a fire broke out at a private residential school in Katageri village, near Madikeri, on Thursday (October 9, 2025) morning.

The deceased has been identified as Pushpak (7), a resident of Chettimani village and a Class 2 student of the school.

The fire was noticed when students were sleeping inside their room. While several children managed to run to safety with the help of school staff, Pushpak reportedly failed to escape in time and sustained burns. He succumbed to his injuries shortly after.

On realising that the boy was missing, school staff went inside and discovered the tragedy.

The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. Personnel from the Fire and Emergency Services, with assistance from local residents, managed to douse the blaze.

Deputy Commissioner Venkataraju, DDPI Basavaraj, and Madikeri police visited the spot and took stock of the situation.

Parents rushed to the school upon hearing the news. Further details are awaited.
