The Tamil Nadu government, on Sunday (November 23, 2025), announced that police honours would be accorded during the funeral of poet and Sahitya Akademi award-winner Erode Tamilanban who passed away at the age of 92 on Saturday.

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has issued directions for according police honours to the scholar’s funeral, to honour his immense contributions to the Tamil language in various forms throughout his long life, an official release said.

Born N. Jagadeesan at Chennimalai in Erode district, Tamilanban was part of the Vanambadi poetry movement launched in the 1970s, which is regarded as an extension of a long tradition of Tamil poetry and is credited with ushering in a renaissance in Tamil literary expression.

A Tamil teacher at New College, Chennai, he was also a newsreader with Doordarshan, and was known for his flawless pronunciation and intonation.

He won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2004 for Vanakkam Valluva, a collection of poems based on the Tirukkural. Tamilanban had said in a media interview that the poems were intended to seek clarifications from Tiruvalluvar himself.
