Some districts in north Tamil Nadu to receive heavy rain today

After a hot day, many places in the State experienced rainfall towards the evening on Thursday, catching people off guard. Places such as Maraimalai Nagar, Kattankulathur, Red Hills, and localities along Old Mahabalipuram Road and East Coast Road witnessed heavy rain.

For Friday, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has forecast the likelihood of light to moderate rain at a few places with thunderstorm and lightning in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal. These could be accompanied by gusty winds of speed reaching 30-40 kmph in one or two places. Heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Tiruvallur, Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Vellore, and Kancheepuram districts.

On Saturday, light to moderate rain is likely to occur at a few places over north Tamil Nadu, some places in southern parts of the State, and over Puducherry and Karaikal, accompanied by thunderstorm and lightning with gusty winds speed reaching 30-40 kmph in one or two places.

On Sunday, heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over the Nilgiris and Erode districts.

Widespread rain

According to data provided by the RMC here, observatories at Coonoor in the Nilgiris recorded 26 mm, Thanjavur 18 mm, Tiruttani 18 mm, Valparai 11.6 mm, Erode 6 mm, and Kodaikanal 1 mm from 8.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. on Thursday.

Weather stations at the Tirupattur Collectorate office recoded 40.5 mm, Kalavai in Ranipet 40 mm, Jaya Engineering College in Tiruvallur 37.5mm, Meenambakkam ISRO 29.7 mm, Ranipet 25 mm, Coonoor 24.5 mm, Ennore Port 22 mm, Hosur 19 mm, Karaikal 16.5 mm, Tiruttani ISRO 16 mm, Chennai 15.5 mm, Upasi Tea Research Foundation in Coimbatore 13 mm, and VIT Chennai 7.5 mm. The Sandhiyur KVK station in Salem recorded 31.5 mm and Virinjipuram KVK in Vellore recorded 29 mm during the same period. Rain gauges at ACS Medical College in Kancheepuram recorded 52.5 mm, Chembarambakkam 49.5 mm, LMOIS Kolapakkam 38 mm, Poonamallee 38 mm, Thuraiyur in Tiruchi 34.5 mm, Puzhal in Tiruvallur district 24.5 mm, Good Will School in Villivakkam of Tiruvallur 15 mm, Anna University 14.5 mm, West Tambaram 13.5 mm, Hindustan University 9 mm, and YMCA Nandanam 8 mm.

With the Southwest monsoon being active over the State, rainfall occurred at many places in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal in the 24 hours ending 8.30 a.m. on Thursday. There was a fall in maximum temperature by 1 degree to 4 degrees Celsius in many pockets during the same period.
