A goods vehicle driver was killed on the spot after a speeding heavy goods truck overturned onto his vehicle on National Highway 44 near Doddapailagurki–Shettigere Cross in Chickballapur district in the early hours of Tuesday.

The driver, identified as Chandrappa, 50, a resident of Attibele, was trapped under the truck and died instantly.

According to the police, the accident occurred when an allegedly speeding goods truck travelling from Bengaluru towards Hyderabad attempted to overtake another vehicle. In the process, the driver reportedly lost control, causing the truck to skid for a few metres before overturning onto a moving goods vehicle.

The impact was severe, and due to the massive weight of the truck, the goods vehicle was completely crushed. Debris from the mangled vehicle was strewn across the road.

Senior police officials, led by Chickballapur Superintendent of Police Kushal Chowksey, visited the spot and supervised the rescue and clearance operations. Three cranes were pressed into service to remove the overturned truck.

The truck driver sustained injuries and was shifted to a hospital. A case has been registered for rash and negligent driving and causing death by negligence.

Traffic on the busy highway was disrupted for some time following the accident before being restored after clearance operations.
