A school headmaster was shot at and killed by unidentified men on a motorcycle in Uttar Dinajpur district of West Bengal on Saturday (August 8, 2026). The deceased, identified as Nazrul Islam, was shot down near the Madaripur area of Islampur while he was on his way to work on Saturday (August 8, 2026) morning, leaving the locality in a state of shock.
He was rushed to the Islampur Sub-Divisional Hospital immediately after the attack, and later shifted to a government medical facility in Siliguri, but he eventually succumbed to his injuries in the afternoon.
The Islampur police have launched an investigation into the incident and are looking at CCTV footage from the area to identify the criminals behind the attack. No arrests have been made so far. The police have not been able to establish any specific motive behind the murder.
The local police officials also visited the site of the incident to recover evidence.
“We visited the deceased man’s house. We have found a few leads; we are working on it. We will share more details after we are further ahead in our investigation,” a senior police official told media persons.
Ruksana Khatun, Mr. Islam’s wife told media persons that her husband did not have any feud with anyone. “About 10 minutes after he left I got a call from an unknown number who told me that someone has shot my husband. I could not believe them. Even my husband spoke on the call and told me that he was shot,” she said.
Commenting on the issue, Leader of Opposition in the Assembly, Ritabrata Banerjee, said that this is a serious issue and should be thoroughly investigated. “All the people responsible must be punished,” Mr Banerjee said.
Meanwhile, senior Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said that such violence and attacks are not a new thing in West Bengal. “Guns and bullets are being used everywhere in Bengal. Bombs, pistols, guns, bullets, loot; this is what Bengal has become. We have not been able to redeem Bengal from this image,” Mr. Chowdhury said.
