After a three-day private visit to Wayanad, Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, and his mother, Sonia Gandhi, chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party, departed for New Delhi on Monday (September 22, 2025) morning.
They left on a chartered flight from Calicut International Airport at around 11 a.m. Initially scheduled to travel by helicopter from Wayanad to the airport, their plans were altered due to inclement weather, forcing them to proceed by road.
The visit, which began on Friday (September 19), coincided with the week-long outreach programme of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Wayanad MP and All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary. Ms Vadra is also set to fly out from Calicut Airport on Monday (September 22) night after concluding her engagements in Malappuram district.
Although this was a private visit, Mr. Gandhi had held informal discussions with K.C. Venugopal, AICC general secretary (Organisation), and Sunny Joseph, president of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee on the political situation in the State. The talks were also aimed at addressing the issues facing the Wayanad District Congress Committee, which has been grappling with a series of issues such as the suicides of local leaders including that of treasurer M.N. Vijayan and his son nine months ago.
On Saturday, Mr. Gandhi, accompanied by Ms. Vadra, his sister, had inaugurated an auditorium in the name of the late Congress stalwart Oommen Chandy at Kottathara grama panchayat in Wayanad. Also, Ms Vadra along with her mother visited the M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation at Puthoorvayal near Meppadi, where they toured the nursery and arboretum and participated in a sapling planting ceremony.
