J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Sunday underlined the need to establish peace in the Union Territory (UT), while noting that security did not rest with the elected government.

“Maintaining peace is the responsibility of the authorities tasked with it, not his government, and those responsible should fulfil it,” Mr. Abdullah said, after unveiling the special edition “Peace Jersey” of Real Kashmir FC in Srinagar.

He was making an indirect reference to the J&K Lieutenant-Governor, who commands the security agencies in the UT.

Mr. Abdullah stressed that peace was a prerequisite for development, tourism and sports. “Peace is a must. Now, the day-night match that was discussed, if the environment is not good, then who will come to play in the evening? For everything, we need peace,” he said.

On the new jersey, Mr. Abdullah said, “The jersey design is a tribute to Kashmir’s cultural heritage and aspirations. Drawing inspiration from the historic Hari Parbat Fort – a symbol of communal harmony housing a shrine, a temple, and a gurdwara – the kit features a sky-blue base signifying peace.”

He added that the government was committed to strengthening sports infrastructure across Jammu and Kashmir. “Sports are a vital bridge for peace. Ensuring this is a responsibility that must be fulfilled by all concerned,” he said.
