Police arrested one of the two prime accused in the rape case of Kolkata woman from Haridevpur. The accused was arrested from the Bardhaman railway station on Tuesday (September 9, 2025) night while attempting to flee, police said.

“One accused of Haridevpur Police Station area rape case, Chandan Malik has been picked up from Burdwan Station last night,” a police statement on Wednesday (September 10, 2025) said.

The 20-year-old female survivor, in her complaint, said two men raped her at a house after inviting her for a ‘birthday party’. The police pressed charges of gang rape against Chandan Malik and Debangshu Biswas.

“A 20-year-old woman was allegedly raped by two persons in Kolkata’s Haridevpur area,” the police said on Sunday (September 7, 2025). The alleged incident took place at a house in Regent Colony on Friday (September 5, 2025).

According to the complainant, she went to a house with Chandan Malik whom she had met a few months ago.

The survivor alleged that she was informed that they were going to a birthday party but when they went to the house, she found only Malik and Biswas there, who allegedly raped her on Friday (September 5, 2025). The woman filed a complaint against the two at the Haridevpur police station on the next morning. According to the police, the two men are absconding and a search for them has been launched.

The owner of the house said that they had given the ground floor on rent to Debangshu Biswas, alias Deep, who had introduced himself as a government employee and said that he would stay with his mother. The owner also said that the police visited the house on Saturday (September 6, 2025) and people in the area were shocked over the incident.

This sexual assault incident comes in the wake of two other rape incidents in the city which took the State by storm.

On June 25, a law student was raped on the campus of South Calcutta Law College. The accused were arrested on June 26, and they have been behind bars and have been denied bail ever since, Kolkata Police filed a charge sheet against former Trinamool Congress student leader, Monojit Mishra, and three others in the case.

The rape and murder of a female doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, 2024, had triggered widespread protests and outrage in Kolkata for several months. The accused Sanjoy Roy was arrested on August 10. A trial court had, on January 20, 2025, convicted former Kolkata Police civic volunteer to life imprisonment for the heinous crime.
