Minister hails C-HED as an exemplary model, offers full support from govt.

Fisheries Minister V.E. Abdul Gafoor on Friday (June 5, 2026) hailed the Centre for Heritage, Environment and Development (C-HED) under the Kochi Corporation as an exemplary model of sustainable urban development.

The Minister was speaking after presenting the Bhoomimitra Award-2026, instituted by the Aluva Paristhithi Samrakshan Sangham to the C-HED at Aluva on the occasion of World Environment Day.

“The C-HED is the most suitable model to be considered for urban development by the State government. The government will extend all support to help it evolve into an institution of global standards,” the Minister said.

Established in 2002, the C-HED functions as the research and development wing of the Corporation in the fields of sustainable urban development, governance, environment, tourism, culture, and heritage.

Corporation standing committee chairpersons P.M. Naseema and Seena Gokulan, secretary P.S. Shibu, and C-HED director Rajan Chedambath received the award.

Aluva MLA Anwar Sadath chaired the event.

Environment Day observed

St. Teresa’s College (Autonomous), Ernakulam, observed World Environment Day with a Climate Change Awareness Rally and Recycling Championship. The event was organised by Bhoomitrasena Club in association with NSS Unit 41.

The programme was inaugurated by Mayor V.K. Minimol. Anu Joseph, Principal, presided over the function, while Sr. Tessa, director of the college, felicitated.

The Department of Chemistry at the college organised a talk on environmental sustainability by Arun Babu K.P., Assistant Professor, School of Environmental Studies, Cochin University of Science and Technology.

Afforestation project launched

Ashoka trees were planted on Amrita School of Medicine campus in Kochi, marking the launch of an Ashoka grove initiative. Led by the Kerala State Medicinal Plants Board, the programme was organised as part of the World Environment Day observance.

Oushadhi managing director T.K. Hrideek , Amrita School of Medicine Principal Dr. K.P. Girish Kumar, and Dr. Jaggu Swami were present.
