The Telangana Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy is set to meet on Monday (November 17) to take up several critical issues, with the long-pending local body elections topping the agenda.
The Cabinet is expected to deliberate extensively on the conduct of the polls, with the High Court issuing a firm deadline of November 24 for the government to announce the election schedule. The local body polls’ delay of nearly two years is due to the legal hassles over the 42% BC reservation that government is keen on.
GO 9, which provides 42% reservation for Backward Classes in local bodies, was stayed by the High Court recently. The Court directed that elections be held under the earlier reservation pattern. The State government subsequently appealed to the Supreme Court, which dismissed the petition.
Final call
In the backdrop of this, officials were instructed to submit a comprehensive report, and the Law Department submitted its findings after detailed consultations. The upcoming Cabinet meeting is now expected to take a final call based on this report. This was further hinted at by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy after the Jubilee Hills bypoll results.
It will be interesting to see whether the government goes ahead with the polls, particularly in the backdrop of BC associations demanding that elections should be held only after 42% reservations were legally cleared.
Another key issue on the agenda will be the disbursement of Rythu Bharosa support to farmers, which the government is eager to release ahead of the Rabi season.
The Gig Workers’ Welfare Bill is also likely to be placed and discussed as the draft legislation is ready. The Bill aims to provide social security and institutional support to gig and platform-based workers across Telangana.
