Even countries that are at the forefront of Responsible Tourism (RT) have much to learn from Kerala, and what sets the State apart on the global RT map is its people-centric model, experts who took part in the Global Responsible Tourism Meet in Kozhikode have observed.
Kevin Phun, director, Centre for Responsible Tourism in Singapore, said the world had recognised Singapore as a leading country in the field of RT. He, however, noted that Singapore’s story was largely centred on sustainable models of waste management.
“Owing to the distinctive nature of its tourism industry, community participation in Singapore is limited. In contrast, Kerala’s RT initiatives are exemplary. There is extensive participation by ordinary people, which has helped significantly improve their quality of life. Kerala’s model stands out as a global example,” he said.
Oshan Lepcha, coordinator, Association for Conservation and Tourism, who made a presentation on tourism development in the northeastern States, said rural tourism formed the very foundation of RT. Mr. Lepcha noted that the first step was to introduce people in remote villages to the possibilities of modern life.
Speaking at the event, Komal Darira, founder of Women for World Tours, pointed out that steps needed to be taken to increase women’s representation in public spaces. Ayusha Prasen, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Community Homestay Network, called for government support for women-led tourism enterprises.
The two-day meet concluded on Sunday (February 8). Kerala Tourism additional secretary Jagadeesh D., Kerala RT Mission CEO Rupesh Kumar, and others spoke at the concluding session.
