Idukki records 70.26 % polling till 7 p.m. on December 9

The voter turnout across 63 local bodies in Idukki district stood at 70.26% as of 7 p.m. on Tuesday. Of the total electorate consisting of 9,121,224 voters, 6,40,890 have cast their votes.

In the 2020 local body election, the district recorded a polling rate of 74.68%.

The polls were held in 52 grama panchayats, eight block panchayats, two municipalities, and a district panchayat. A total of 1,036 candidates were in the fray.

The voter turnout in Thodupuzha municipality was recorded at 77.36%, and in Kattappana municipality 69.56%. The turnout at the block panchayat level is as follows: Devikulam 68.84%, Nedumkandam 73.01%, Elamdesham 75.19%, Idukki 66.56%, Kattappana 70.51%, Thodupuzha 73.05%, Azhutha 66.07% and Adimaly 68.51%.

The first tribal panchayat at Edamalakkudy recorded 68.22% polling. Out of 1,803 voters in the tribal panchayat, 1,230 voters cast their ballots.

Water Resources Minister Roshy Augustine cast his vote at Vazhathope Government LP School along with his wife, Rani. Mar John Nellikkunel, Bishop of the Idukki diocese of the Syro-Malabar Church, cast his vote at Karimpan Manippara LP School in Idukki. Kerala Congress (Joseph) faction leader P.J. Joseph cast his vote at Purappuzha LP School in Thodupuzha.

A 104-year-old man and a 101-year-old woman cast their votes in the district.

In a tragic incident, a 20-year-old drowned in a check dam after casting his vote in Idukki. The deceased has been identified as Karunapuram Chalakkudimedu resident Sreejith.

According to police, the incident occurred around 12 p.m. The deceased, who was on his way back home after casting his vote at the Appappikkada booth of Karunapuram panchayath, went for a bath in the check dam and drowned. The police and local residents rushed him to a nearby hospital, but he could not be saved. The body has been sent for postmortem examination.
