A united Opposition on Friday (April 17, 2026) defeated the Constitutional Amendment Bill that sought to redistribute Lok Sabha seats based on the 2011 census to expedite the implementation of women’s reservation.

While 298 votes were polled in favour of the Bill, 230 were polled against, failing to meet the necessary two-thirds majority mark needed for a constitutional amendment Bill. The total strength of the House at the time of voting was 528.
