Mizoram Governor Vijay Kumar Singh extended Governor’s Rule in the Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) for six more months, citing continuing political uncertainty and administrative considerations.

According to a notification issued by the District Council and Minority Affairs Department on Monday, the Governor assumed functions and powers of the CADC on July 7, 2025, for a period of six months and the it has been extended for six more months.

The notification stated that Lakkhan Chakma claimed to be the chief of the CADC after the expiry of the first six months of Governor’s Rule on January 7, but the Governor subsequently sought the opinion of the Council of Ministers, headed by Chief Minister Lalduhoma.

The Council of Ministers observed that there was no justification in extending Governor’s Rule, as the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), the political party that rules Mizoram, enjoyed a clear majority.

However, Mr. Singh noted that frequent shifts in political allegiance by the elected members necessitated continuation of Governor’s Rule in CADC.

Prolonged instability

Governor’s Rule was imposed in CADC following prolonged instability, triggered by the removal of Bharatiya Janata Party leader Molin Kumar Chakma from the post of Chief Executive Member through a no-confidence motion on June 16, 2025.

Mr Chakma assumed charge on February 4, heading the first BJP-led executive in the CADC since its formation in 1972, but the government collapsed within four months due to mass defections.

In June, 12 BJP members resigned and joined the ZPM. A month later, 16 ZPM members staked claim to form the next executive committee.
