Burglars decamped with 10 sovereigns of gold jewellery, two kg of silver objects and ₹1 lakh cash from the house of goldsmith in Arani town in Tiruvannamalai.

Police said that the victim Mani, 72, and his wife Kanchana were staying in a rented house on Big Street in the town. Mani works as a goldsmith in a private jewellery shop in the town. The couple has three children, and are settled in Chennai.

Initial inquiry revealed that the couple went to his son’s house in Chennai on October 19 for Deepavali festival. The couple got an alert from his neighbour, Arun, on Thursday that the main door of Mani’s house was found broken.

Based on the alert, Arani Town police inspected the spot. They found cupboards and almirah were broken. Valuables including cash, gold jewellery and silver objects were missing from them.

Forensic experts also inspected the house and took fingerprints impressions. Police have taken footage along the route where the shop was located. The Superintendent of Police (SP) M. Sudhakar John has formed four special teams to nab the culprits. A case has been registered. A probe is underway.
