After the milk adulteration incident in East Godavari district, officials of Food Safety Department have intensified quality checks at dairies across SPSR Nellore district, and sent samples of milk products to labs for testing.

The officials inspected various milk collection points, bulk milk chilling centres and milk product manufacturing centres at Buchireddypalem and Sangam mandals of the district on Friday (February 27).

Speaking to The Hindu, Assistant Food Controller (AFC) G. Venkateswara Rao said they have received complaints about some milk collection centre operators who are allegedly adding other ingredients to milk to make it appear thicker and to increase the fat content.

“To inquire into the allegations, we urge the public to provide relevant information on the operators who are involved in such irregularities. The name, address and other details of the complainants will not be disclosed under any circumstances,” he said.

If milk adulteration is proven, the officials will register criminal cases against the culprits under the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

On Thursday, the Food Safety Department staff made surprise inspections in various areas of the city. Dairies at Magunta Layout, Balaji Nagar, Dargamitta and B.V. Nagar areas of the city were inspected.

During these inspections, they collected samples of milk and milk products such as curd, ghee and paneer. The samples were sent to laboratories for quality testing. If any adulteration is found in the milk or milk products, a fine of ₹5 lakh will be imposed on the trader.
