The Kochi Corporation now boasts an additional green cover of 4.48 acres, ever since the Haritha Keralam Mission (HKM) kicked off its ‘Pachathuruth’ programme here.
As many as 24 green islets have been created within the Corporation limits. In Ernakulam, a total of 149 green islets have been established, covering 25.04 acres. The group is now setting another ambitious goal of raising the number of green islets to 200 and ensuring that every local body has at least one by the end of the year.
In the district, four green islets have been created by clearing dumpyards, five in municipalities, 63 in local bodies, two near beaches, 39 in schools, and five in campuses, among others. In total, 10,928 trees have been planted in the district.
Even amid challenges the city faces, such as limited land and rising land prices, the group continues to create new milestones. “Land availability is indeed an issue. We have even lost a few green islets due to building expansions. Those set up in schools and institutions are particularly at risk. So, even when we plant, we ensure we select areas that aren’t threatened,” said Renjini S., district co-ordinator, HKM, Ernakulam.
Ms. Renjini added that creating new green cover is essential. “The aim is to reduce the carbon footprint. These green spaces help sequester carbon, and as trees age, their ability to do so decreases. Therefore, it is important to plant new trees and expand the green cover,” she said.
On average, the size of these green islets extends to 5 cents, ranging from as small as 0.5 cents to several acres. “Even individuals can approach us to create these green islets,” she added.
The plants are sourced from the Social Forestry wing of the Kerala Forest department, and their upkeep and management are carried out either by community members or Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) workers.
Nisha A., a resource person of the HKM, said the group plans to ensure that at least one green islet is created in each division of the city corporation. “We plant native fruit trees in institutions, allowing the community to enjoy the fruits as well. Even in limited spaces, we can create a green cover by planting 4–5 trees,” added Ms. Nisha.
