Five arrested for stealing power cables from residential layouts near Mysuru

The Mysuru district police have arrested five persons in connection with the theft of power cables installed in residential layouts near Beerihundi village on the outskirts of the city.

After receiving the Jayapura police station received a complaint from Vrushabendraswamy, a resident of Shettinayakanahalli village on Monday (May 4, 2026) that about 5 kilometres of ACSR wire worth around ₹ 2.7 lakh installed in the layouts near Beerihundi had been stolen, the police began checking vehicles near Harohalli Gate in the police station limits.

When the police intercepted a goods vehicle coming from Saragur side on Friday (May 8, 2026) and conducted a check, it was found that one Chikkannachari, a resident of Saragur was transporting stolen wires in the vehicle.

Upon inspection, the police found four bundles of ACSR wires. During questioning, it was confirmed that the wires were related to the theft case. Consequently, the five persons present in the vehicle were arrested.

The arrested have been identified as Chikkannachari, 58, from Saragur Town, Chandra, 48, Arif, 38, Shivanna, 44, and Ravi, 32, all from Ammathi in Virajpet taluk of Kodagu district.

Four bundles of ACSR wire weighing 281 kgs, one goods vehicle and cash amounting to ₹2.47 lakh were seized from the accused.

The police, which had registered a case under Sections 303(3) of the BNS Act and 137 (2) of the Karnataka Electricity Act, produced the accused before the court. They have been remanded to judicial custody.

With the arrest of the above accused, the police said it has solved two theft cases — one registered at Jayapura Police Station and another registered at Varuna Police Station.

Superintendent of Mysuru district police Mallikarjun Baladandi has complimented the police team involved in tracing the accused involved in the theft case.
