The construction of the elevated walkway at the Thalassery sea bridge, aimed at opening new possibilities in the district’s tourism sector, will begin on March 12. The foundation stone-laying ceremony will be held in the evening at Jawahar Ghat.
The decision was taken at a meeting held in the chamber of Speaker A.N. Shamseer to review the progress of heritage tourism projects being implemented through the Kerala Irrigation Infrastructure Development Corporation (KIIDC) with financial assistance from the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB).
The design of the elevated walkway has been prepared by Jindal Stainless Limited, which had earlier designed the country’s first glass bridge at Kanyakumari.
The Speaker directed officials to ensure that the necessary preparatory steps are completed so that the project, being implemented under the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) model, is finished within the stipulated timeframe.
Other heritage tourism initiatives in Thalassery are also progressing. These include renovation work at Illikunnu Church, the establishment of the Thalassery Heritage Tourism Headquarters at the Municipal Stadium, and the installation of monuments at major junctions highlighting Thalassery’s legacy as the land of the three Cs — Cake, Cricket and Circus.
The meeting was attended by KIIDC general manager Shobha, the Speaker’s private secretary T. Manoharan Nair, and additional private secretaries S. Biju and Arjun S.
