The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Friday (October 31, 2025) criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for what it described as “hateful and derogatory remarks against the people of Tamil Nadu” during an election campaign in Bihar.

In a statement, CPI(M) State secretary P. Shanmugam alleged that Mr. Modi pretends to show affection towards Tamils only for electoral gains. However, in other States, he had been making disparaging remarks against Tamils. “During the Odisha Assembly elections, he triggered hatred by questioning whether a Tamil could rule Odisha. He also spread slander by claiming that the keys to the Puri Jagannath temple treasury were hidden in Tamil Nadu. Now, for political mileage in Bihar, he alleged that Biharis are being tortured in Tamil Nadu,” Mr. Shanmugam said.

“Unable to seek votes on the strength of his government’s achievements, Mr. Modi has repeatedly tried to stir up hatred, sometimes against Muslims, sometimes against Christians, and now against Tamils. This kind of speech is unbecoming of the office he holds,” he said, urging the Election Commission of India (ECI) to take action.
