The Kerala High Court has sought a report from the State government on the steps taken to hold police officials accountable in custodial torture cases.

This followed a petition by Pathanamthitta native and former Students Federation of India (SFI) leader K. Jayakrishnan, who alleged that he was brutally assaulted while in police custody by Alappuzha Deputy Superintendent of Police Madhu Babu, who was then a Circle Inspector of police, and K. Gopakumar, who was then the Sub Inspector at the Konni police station. He sought a court directive to initiate criminal prosecution against the two officers.

The petitioner said that apart from being assaulted, the police entered his name as an accused in many unsolved cases. Little action was taken against the officers, despite a report by the District Police Chief recommending action against them.
