District Congress Committee (DCC) president K. Praveenkumar on Thursday released videos showing police personnel carrying an explosive substance, which is then seen flying towards a mob of United Democratic Front (UDF) workers during the clash at Perambra on October 10.
This comes a day after the police took into custody seven UDF workers for their alleged involvement in the hurling of the explosive substance during the incident in which Vadakara MP Shafi Parambil suffered nasal injuries in alleged police action.
Mr. Praveenkumar, addressing the media at Perambra, said that they were releasing six visuals. “One of them shows the police throwing a grenade and a teargas shell, which then bursts with a loud sound. Another one shows only the bursting of the tear gas shell and the grenade. One visual shows Deputy Superintendent of Police, Vadakara, R. Hariprasad, carrying a lathi in one hand a teargas shell in another. There is also a visual of a police official telling others not to throw the explosive substance because the MP was present there,” he said.
Mr. Praveenkumar alleged that these things happened when around 50 workers of the CPI(M) were also present in the area.
The Congress leader claimed that their conflict was with the police and not with the CPI(M). He wondered then why the CPI(M) leaders were objecting to K.C. Venugopal, All-India Congress Committee general secretary (organisation), when he criticised the police action against Mr. Parambil.
Meanwhile, the UDF and the Revolutionary Marxist Party of India activists staged a satyagraha outside the office of the Perambra DySP.
Opening the event, senior Congress leader Mullappally Ramachandran said that the attack on Mr. Parambil, was condemnable.
Earlier, the Left Democratic Front held a public meeting in Perambra on Wednesday where senior CPI(M) leaders like T.P. Ramakrishnan and E.P. Jayarajan were seen making critical remarks against the police and Mr. Parambil.
