The Congress on Wednesday (January 14, 2026) cited China’s record trade surplus to target the BJP-led government, alleging a policy of “capitulation” towards Beijing.

Congress general secretary in charge of communications Jairam Ramesh said China had announced a record trade surplus of $1.2 trillion in 2025, and claimed that India alone accounted for around 10% of that surplus.

In a post on X, Mr. Ramesh said the figures should not come as a surprise given what he described as the government’s “carefully calibrated capitulation to China.”

“China has just announced that it had a record trade surplus of $1.2 trillion in 2025. This means that its trade surplus with India alone was about 10% of the total,” the Congress communication chief said.

“It should not be surprising though given our carefully callibrated capitulation to China — an example of which was just seen with the way the BJP and RSS leaders were hobnobbing with a high-level Chinese Communist Party delegation day before,” Mr. Ramesh added.

The Congress leader’s remarks come amid persistent Opposition criticism of India’s trade dependence on China and the government’s handling of bilateral relations, particularly in the backdrop of border tensions and widening trade deficits.

The BJP has maintained that it is pursuing India’s economic and strategic interests firmly while engaging with all major global players.
