The Division of Clinical Radiology, Christian Medical College (CMC), celebrated Global Interventional Radiology Day at its campus in Vellore by organising various events.

It had educational stalls and conducted ultrasound tests. According to a press release, I. Rajesh, medical superintendent, CMC, said the Department of Interventional Radiology in CMC provides minimally invasive image guided procedures. It helps to reduce the total stay of the patients in the hospital and recover faster.

Tracing the history of such interventional procedures, Succeena Alexander, vice-principal, CMC, said that it was Charles Dotter who successfully performed the first angioplasty under X-Ray guidance at CMC in 1964. Over decades, the speciality has grown to provide a wide variety of procedures, she said.

Educational stalls were arranged in Vellore and Ranipet campuses of CMC. Ultrasound examinations were performed to check the neck arteries supplying the brain free of cost for more than 400 individuals above 45 years of age.

Several videos prepared by the staff and students were exhibited. Models were used to explain to the visitors. Some of the examples for these pinhole procedures included opening of a blocked blood tube, closing of a bleeding blood tube, drainage of blocked bile tubes and urines tubes.

Role of embolisation in the treatment of uterine fibroids, knee joint problems without surgery were demonstrated. Importance of immediately approaching a hospital in cases of suspected stroke (brain attack) was highlighted.

On the occasion, Shyamkumar N. Keshava, Head, Department of Clinical Radiology, CMC, and senior staff including Gnanamurthy, Sridhar Gibikote, and Anu Eapen were present, the release said.
