The Census 2027 will be conducted entirely in digital mode with citizens being given the option of self-enumeration online, Deputy Commissioner K. Nagendra Prasad said on Tuesday.

Addressing a press conference at the district administrative complex in Ballari, he said that the upcoming census will be India’s 16th overall and the eighth since Independence.

The exercise, originally scheduled for 2021, has been delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and is now being taken up in 2027, he said.

He said that the census plays a crucial role in national planning and development and urged citizens to actively participate by providing accurate data.

Self-enumeration

As per information provided by the officer, the first phase of the exercise will allow citizens to self-register their details on the official portal https://se.census.gov.in. This will be followed by door-to-door visits by enumerators for house listing and data collection.

The final phase of physical enumeration is scheduled for February 2027.

Staff deployment

A total of 2,798 enumerators and 473 supervisors have been appointed in the district. These include teachers, anganwadi workers and ASHAs.

In addition, 17 charge officers, 12 for rural areas and five for urban areas, have been designated.

“Training has already been imparted to enumerators across all taluks, with the support of 48 field trainers and four master trainers trained at the Administrative Training Institute in Mysuru,” he said.

Digital, technical features

Highlighting the key feature of the census, the Deputy Commissioner said that the process will be completely paperless with enumerators using smartphones and mobile applications to collect data.

Dedicated teams, including multi-tasking staff and State coordinators, have been deployed to address technical issues.

“A total of 2,544 house-listing blocks have been identified across the district, each comprising 150 to 200 households. All blocks have been geo-tagged using Google Maps to ensure accuracy and ease of data collection,” he said.

He appealed to the public to cooperate with enumerators during field visits or utilise the self-enumeration facility within the stipulated time.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Mohammed N. Zubair, Ballari City Corporation Commissioner P.S. Manjunath and others were present.
