Burglars decamped with 65 sovereigns of gold jewellery, two kgs of silver objects and ₹20,000 cash from the house of a retired Block Development Officer (BDO) at Ponnur village near Vandavasi town in Tiruvannamalai on Saturday.

Police said that the victim, K. Appavu, 68, and his wife, A. Nirmala Kumarai, 63, a retired teacher, were residents in the village. Along with his wife, Appavu went to his daughter B. Priya’s house in Chennai on September 10.

When the couple returned, they found the cupboards and almirah broken. Valuables, including cash, gold jewellery and silver objects, were missing from them. Hard disks of CCTV cameras fixed inside the outlets were also missing and the cameras were damaged.

Immediately, they alerted Ponnur police, who rushed to the house with forensic experts. Fingerprints were taken. Police have secured the CCTV footage along the route where the house is located. The Superintendent of Police, M. Sudhakar John, has formed four special teams to nab the culprits. A case has been registered and further probe is under way.
