The State Goods and Services Tax (GST) department has unearthed turnover suppression amounting to ₹157.87 crore in inspections carried out in restaurants across the State.

The inspections, christened ‘Operation Honeydukes,’ began at 6 p.m. on Wednesday and continued into the early hours of Thursday. The action was conducted jointly by the intelligence and enforcement wings of the State GST department.

According to department officials, 41 squads conducted simultaneous inspections in 42 restaurants. Apart from turnover suppression amounting to ₹157.87 crore, the inspection squads also unearthed tax evasion amounting to ₹7.89 crore, according to provisional figures released by the department.

Similar inspections will be carried out in the days ahead as part of the effort to check tax evasion, the department said.
