The West Bengal Police on Saturday (December 20, 2025) denounced ‘disingenuous’ attempts to draw a parallel between the recent murder of Dipu Chandra Das in Bangladesh and the lynching of a father-son duo in Murshidabad in April.
In a social media post, the police said that “malicious efforts are being made from certain quarters to draw parallels between the recent murder of Dipu Chandra Das in Bangladesh and the tragic death of the father-son duo of Haragobindo and Chandan Das in Murshidabad about 8 months back”.
“Such comparisons are highly inciteful, factually misleading, and intended to disturb public order. 13 accused persons were promptly arrested in the Murshidabad case, and a strong chargesheet was filed. Judgment of the case is expected very soon,” the police said.
The statement comes after several BJP leaders took to social media, in the wake of the Bangladesh incident, to refer to the communal clashes in Murshidabad in April 2025 when Haragobindo Das and Chandan Das were lynched to death.
“Drawing parallels with the events in Bangladesh is nothing but a disingenuous attempt to spread communal mistrust where the law is already taking its course,” the police said. The police said they were monitoring handles spreading provocative misinformation and legal action will be initiated against those attempting to communalise criminal incidents.
Suspended Trinamool MLA announces plans to float new political party
Meanwhile, Bharatpur MLA Humayun Kabir, who was suspended by the Trinamool Congress after he announced plans to construct Babri Masjid in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district, on Sunday announced his plans to launch a new political party on Monday ( December 22).
Posters have come up in Beldanga stating that Mr. Kabir will announce a new party at Khagrupara More at Beldanga on December 22. Mr. Kabir said that his party would provide a platform to the marginalised people of the State. Earlier, before announcing the name of his party, the MLA had said that he was willing to ally with the CPI(M), the Congress and the Indian Secular Front (ISF).
“I am inviting those who are against Mamata Banerjee and the BJP to join hands. I am ready to share seats. But if someone thinks he is bigger than everyone, then I will fight alone. If necessary, I will contest all the seats in West Bengal,” Mr. Kabir said on Sunday. He was suspended by the Trinamool Congress on December 4, and on December 11, he laid the foundation stone for Babri Masjid.
Five years ago, before the 2021 Assembly polls, the Indian Secular Front (ISF) had made its debut in West Bengal. Now, it appears that another political party appealing to the minorities of the State will emerge right before the upcoming Assembly election.
Minorities have backed the Trinamool Congress since the 2011 Assembly polls, and any dent in the Muslim vote bank may impact the political prospects of the party.
More than the political party, it is the announcement of the construction of Babri Masjid at Beldanga that has drawn large crowds to the venue. Every day, hundreds of people bring bricks to the venue and offer donations for the construction of the mosque.
