Transport Department to consult Tiruppur with private bus operators on July 7 to address complaints of “Unilateral” fare revision

Transport Department to meet with private bus operators in Tiruppur on Tuesday (July 7, 2026), in the wake of response to complaints from the public about rise in fares since the start of July.

Opposing the revision, social activists took the issue to the Transport Department, highlighting, in particular, the predicament of workers in the unorganised sector and the student community who depend on the private bus services in the Erode-Tiruppur-Coimbatore sector in large numbers.

The bus operators plying services between Erode and Coimbatore and Tiruppur and Coimbatore were found by the authorities to have increased the fares “unilaterally” by ₹5 to ₹10 a ticket, based on the distance.

An official confirmed there is no such provision. As per procedure, bus operators are required to submit particulars of rise in fuel costs and toll charges to the government. Subsequently, the government holds consultations and elicits public feedback, before issuing a notification on revision of fares.

The bus operators reasoned with the officials that they had made a formal request to the State Government for revision of fares during May after the Central Government, and that in the absence of a response until the end of July, they found themselves in a compulsive situation to increase the fares to sustain operations. The bus operators agreed to revert to the old fare after the date for consultation was fixed.
