Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) chief Tariq Hameed Karra on Monday (March 10, 2026) said Prime Minister Narendra Modi “must take responsibility for his failure in foreign policy”, as the party organised street protests in parts of Jammu and Kashmir against the proposed India-U.S. trade deal.

Several leaders were allegedly detained in Kashmir to prevent them from joining these protests.

“India was once respected globally and is now facing humiliation across the world. The Prime Minister’s arrogance has cost the country its dignity internationally. He must take responsibility for this failure in foreign policy,” Mr. Karra said.

He also sought PM Modi’s resignation over the “mishandling of external affairs”.

“The PM surrendered before the U.S. Yes, he surrendered. We demand that (Narendra) Modi ji resigns,” he added.

The senior Congress leader said Mahatma Gandhi’s statues were in 100 countries out of 165. “We were the champions of the non-aligned movement. But India sees a diminishing respect abroad now. Such memes are being made of the Prime Minister that make us feel ashamed,” he said.

Meanwhile, Congress workers held street protests in parts of J&K against the proposed India-U.S. trade deal and alleged it was bound to “affect local economic interests”.

According to the party spokesman, several leaders were detained and the movement of many others were restricted by the police ahead of the protests in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

The spokesman said several leaders were also detained in south Kashmir’s Shopian district.
