Trinamool Congress continues to blame SIR for unnatural deaths in West Bengal

Almost a week after the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in West Bengal, the Trinamool Congress continues to blame the exercise for unnatural deaths in the State.

The West Bengal ruling party cited two instances in the past two days of unnatural death and a suicide bid on the SIR. In a social media post, the Trinamool Congress said that Biman Pramanik, a resident of Hooghly, “suffered a fatal cardiac arrest after days of unbearable anxiety”.

“His name had been wrongly recorded as ‘Biman Pal’ in the SIR list, an error that, for him, became a matter of existence, identity, belonging, and dignity,” the party posted on social media, sharing photographs of the State’s Transport Minister Snehasish Chakraborty meeting bereaved relatives of the deceased.

In another social media post the West Bengal’s ruling party pointed out that a middle-aged man died by suicide in Bhangar, “driven to despair by the dread of being erased from the voters’ list under the SIR process”. Canning Purba Trinamool Congress MLA Saukat Mollah met the family of the deceased.

“As admitted by the Home Minister himself, @BJP4India is on a mission to DETECT, DELETE, and DEPORT. Bengalis are legitimate citizens of this country who have lived here for generations with pride and dignity,” the party posted on social media.

On Sunday (November 9, 2025), Dhaniakhali Trinamool Congress MLA Asima Patra accused the BJP of creating fear among people through misleading statements about NRC and detention camps. The MLA said that a woman and her daughter are currently in critical condition at SSKM Hospital’s ICU after attempting suicide. The family members of the woman said that she had been living at her parental home in Dhaniakhali in the district for the past six years following a marital dispute and was under visible mental stress.

The SIR exercise began on November 4. Between October 28 and November 7, at least 11 deaths—including six by suicide and two suicide attempts—have been highlighted by the Trinamool Congress, alleging fear of disenfranchisement through the SIR process. On November 4, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee hit the streets in Kolkata protesting against SIR.

The BJP leadership has been claiming that all these deaths have nothing to do with SIR and that the Trinamool Congress is creating an atmosphere of fear and panic among the people of the State. Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari on Sunday (November 9) shared videos of people travelling, claiming that it was Bangladeshi residents fleeing West Bengal due to fears of SIR.
