Garima Saikia Garg, the wife of singer-composer Zubeen Garg, has returned the second autopsy report of her husband to the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the circumstances surrounding his death in Singapore on September 19.
An officer from the SIT, mostly comprising officials of the Assam police’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID), had handed over the post-mortem report to Ms. Garg at her residence in Guwahati’s Kahilipara area on Saturday (October 4, 2025). She had received the first autopsy report conducted on the 52-year-old Assamese cultural icon on October 2.

According to the preliminary investigation by the Singapore police, Garg died by drowning while swimming off an island.
“I chose to return the post-mortem report to the investigation officer, as it is part of the ongoing probe. The authorities or the court will decide whether or not the report should be made public. I trust in the legal system to deliver justice for him,” Ms. Garg told journalists.
The Additional Superintendent of Police (CID) and a SIT member, Moramee Das, said the investigating team recorded the statements of Ms. Garg and the singer-composer’s younger sister, Palmi Borthakur. “What they said cannot be disclosed at this stage,” she said.
On October 2, the Singapore Police Force issued a statement saying it provided a copy of the autopsy report of Garg and its preliminary findings on his passing to the High Commission of India upon their request.
“Police investigations on the matter are ongoing. Members of the public are advised not to share any videos or images relating to the circumstances of Garg’s passing, out of respect to the deceased,” the statement read.
Although the report ruled out any foul play, people in Assam were not convinced. Under pressure, the State government had another post-mortem conducted hours before Garg was cremated with full State honours and a 21-gun salute on the outskirts of Guwahati on September 23.
Arrests made
Four people have been arrested so far. Shyamkanu Mahanta, organiser of the North East India Festival in Singapore, where Garg was scheduled to perform, as well as Siddharth Sharma, Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, and Amritprabha Mahanta – the late singer-composer’s manager, drummer, and co-singer, respectively were held in connection with Garg’s death . The first two were arrested in the National Capital Region on October 1, and the last two in Guwahati on October 2 after a six-day interrogation.
All four were remanded in 14-day custody of the CID. The investigators are probing the inconsistencies in the statements provided by the accused.
On October 3, the Governor of Assam constituted a one-man judicial commission headed by retired Gauhati High Court judge Soumitra Saikia to investigate the circumstances surrounding Garg’s death.
Meanwhile, media reports claimed Mr. Goswami alleged that the late singer-composer may have been poisoned and his killers tried to portray his death in a foreign location as an accident.
