A 40-year-old woman was arrested by Kurisilapattu police in Tirupattur on Tuesday for snatching a gold chain worth 2.5 sovereigns from a septuagenarian.

Police said the arrested person was identified as K. Sumathi, a native of Krishnagiri district. She came to her relative’s house in Jadayanur village near Jolarpet town in Tirupattur district. Initial inquiry revealed that victim M. Kannammal, 70, a resident of Jadayanur village, was living with her son M. Ayyappan in the village for many years. As Ayyappan used to go to his mechanic workshop in Tirupattur town, Kannammal stays alone in the house.

The accused, Sumathi, discovered that Kannammal was staying alone in the house. Claiming that she was feeling thirsty, she asked for water from the elderly woman. As Kannammal brought her water, Sumathi snatched the gold chain from the victim and raced away on her moped.

Kannammal cried for help, and neighbours chased Sumathi on their two-wheeler. They nabbed her around a kilometre away from the spot. Based on an alert, Kurisilapattu police inspected the spot. A case was registered and Sumathi was lodged at sub-jail in Tirupattur town. Further probe is under way.
