Residents of a remote village in Tripura staged a protest and blocked a roadway after an elderly woman was killed by an elephant before dawn on Saturday (April 4, 2026). The police administration, which has been extremely busy owing to forthcoming elections to the tribal autonomous district council had a tough time quelling the situation.

Police said the elderly tribal woman was trampled to death by a tusker at Ramkrishnapur village in Khowai district. The elephant broke into the bamboo-made house to attack the family.

Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, who was campaigning for a party nominee in the district council elections, visited the bereaved family and met with villagers. He offered condolences and assured the family of support.

Hundreds of protesters initially created a ruckus at the Mungiakami police station and the local forest range office, demanding that the government take measures to prevent frequent raids by wild elephants. The forest range officer and others were attacked with bricks and sticks but were rescued by security forces.

The agitation came to an end following the intervention of senior police and district administration officials.

This was the second such incident in the past one and a half months, after a man was killed in the Chakmaghat area, also in Khowai district. During a recent Assembly session, the Tripura government stated that an ambitious plan was being implemented to create an elephant corridor in the hills to prevent elephant raids on villages.
