Union Housing and Urban Affairs Secretary Satendra Singh inspected four facilities, including a biogas plant, a tertiary sewage treatment plant, an electric vehicle maintenance workshop and the Kodungaiyur dump yard, operated by the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC), on Saturday.

The inspections were conducted in the presence of Additional Chief Secretary, Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department, Gagandeep Singh Bedi.

At the biogas plant, operated under a public-private partnership, in Chetpet, Mr. Singh reviewed the processing of wet waste to produce biogas. Chennai generates 6,150 tonnes of waste daily, comprising around 3,200 tonnes of biodegradable waste, 2,950 tonnes of non-biodegradable waste, and road silt. The plant can process 140 tonnes of wet waste a day and currently handles around 120 to 140 tonnes of waste supplied by the GCC.

He subsequently inspected the tertiary treatment plant at Koyambedu, which uses reverse osmosis technology. The facility has a capacity of 45 million litres a day, while two such units together treat 90 million litres of wastewater daily to support Chennai’s water security and water reuse.

Mr. Singh also visited the maintenance and charging workshop for electric three-wheelers used for garbage collection. At the Kodungaiyur dump yard, he reviewed biomining operations. Spread across 333 acres, the site had waste for over 252 acres. The ₹641-crore project to excavate and remove legacy waste has been divided into six packages. A total of six acres have been reclaimed so far.

Officials from the GCC and Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board participated in the inspections.
