Two youths were killed in a road accident after a two-wheeler they were travelling was hit by a van on Cuddalore-Chittoor Road near Chengam town in Tiruvannamalai on Thursday.

Police said the deceased were identified as K. Vignesh, 21, and his friend S. Kasinathan, 20. They were childhood friends in Mel Chengam village, and were working as masons.

Initial inquiry revealed that they were returning home on the stretch after completing work, when K. Murugan, 36, the van driver who was proceeding towards Tiruvannamalai town, lost control of the vehicle and hit the duo on their two-wheeler. The incident happened past midnight.

Police said that, in the impact, the duo were badly injured and died on the spot.

Based on an alert, the Mel Chengam police rushed to the spot and the bodies of the deceased were sent to Government Medical College Hospital in Tiruvannamalai for a postmortem. A case was registered. Special teams were formed to nab the van driver, who was absconding. Police also restored the traffic movement on the route. Further probe is on.
